Thor Atkinson Steel Fabrications Ltd. were commissioned by Breedon Group plc to design, fabricate and install a new hot elevator for their asphalt plant at Shap in Cumbria. There existing ‘bucket’ or ‘hot’ elevator was on the verge of breaking down beyond repair. The bucket elevator is a key piece of equipment for the asphalt plant and needed replacing as soon as possible. The elevator is used for transferring dried aggregates from the dryer to the screen (approximately 20m in height), which will eventually be mixed into asphalt.

The project was not a standard like-for-like replacement and presented us with some unforeseen challenges that we were able to overcome due to the depth of experience within the team involved with this project.

Our design engineers designed a brand-new elevator for the project and having got the designs approved we were able to move quickly on the project in order to meet the customer’s requirements. In the first instance, our purchasing department ordered all the necessary components and materials in readiness for the steel fabrication process and to make sure everything would be ready on time for the actual installation. Our steel fabricators manufactured all the required materials as well as pre-assembling the components to ensure a first-time installation on site. In the meantime, our fully owned demolition company, N&R Contractors safely dismantled and removed the existing elevator from the site. Once the old elevator was out the way, we delivered all the components of the new hot elevator to site. The installation was project managed through CDM regulations 2015 and our site fitters did an excellent job of resolved any issues that arose quickly and successfully installed the new elevator within the customer’s timescales.

The newly installed bucket elevator was commissioned, tested and proven to be working as envisaged. Overall, the project has been a success and out customer is very happy with the newly installed bucket elevator.
